Duolingo Expands Its Math Services for More Advanced and Personalized Learning

Translate

Every Duolingo user knows that distinct chime signaling it’s time to study. I’ve used the app for years to brush up on my Spanish and Italian, making sure I’m not losing the vocabulary and grammar rules I’ve worked hard to learn.

I could take that approach to keeping other skills fresh as well. A couple of years back, Duolingo expanded beyond its language learning services to include math and music.

Now, the platform is expanding its math courses to include more K-12 learning and personalized features to help students when they get stuck on a problem or unit.

New features coming to Duolingo Math

Duolingo Math has covered many fundamental topics and concepts from grades 2 through 12, following the US standard curriculum.

As part of the new expansion, Duolingo is launching grade-specific guides, starting at Grade 2 through 8, to help parents better understand the lessons and concepts their children need to learn each year of school.

Beyond the guides, Duolingo Math is rolling out features to support students when they get stuck on a topic.

For instance, if derivatives are getting you down, you can turn to Math Coach, a feature that lets you interact with Eddy, a character who can answer questions or provide step-by-step coaching. Students can use Zari, a Duolingo character designed to help them work through complex problems, to have concepts broken down into multiple steps.

Students can tap a help button in the app’s lesson plan when they need additional guidance or practice with a math concept.

According to Duolingo’s press release, the platform is already seeing early positive results. In a recent study of rising eighth graders (typically 12 or 13 years old), participants reported that their scores improved by 14% after using Duolingo Math features for about five minutes a day over four weeks. The study also found that 88% of the students “felt more confident doing math” after using the app.

Interested in trying out Duolingo? Now through Sept. 11, the app is offering a one-year Super Family plan subscription ($144) for the price of a one-year Super Individual subscription ($120).
