I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day ‒ Episode 10
In a world that is getting progressively complicated, with teenagers who are struggling to find their purpose, Mimi has always felt things were simple. She is basically a weapon with the personality of a small child, but there is bliss in that ignorance. She fights on the front lines, shoots people, and always comes back home to Sheena. But what happens when Mimi starts having complicated feelings that she is not equipped to deal with? While it would've been nice if Seiran's death was the true catalyst for those complicated feelings, this episode really highlights the perspective gap between Mimi and the rest of the cast.
Sheena has finally found a way to contribute in her own unique way. She wants to go all in on developing her magic, but that means she has less time to spend with Mimi, and Mimi doesn't like that, emphasizing the maternal relationship that Sheena has with Mimi. Hal even calls Sheena Mimi's guardian because that's basically what she is. Some of Mimi's actions were a little bit grating since about half of this episode was just her whining. It showcases that Mimi really does not understand Sheena at all. For the first time since the show started, Sheena feels like she can finally contribute to something and be there for people, including Mimi. So naturally, she would want to devote more time to it. But Mimi sees all of this as another obstacle that stops Sheena from spending more time with her.
The focus on Hal in this episode feels a little bit convenient. Sheena discovers that she can potentially use her magic to help cure people, so naturally the show needs to show a character who seems to have a constant affliction that leaves their body weak. Hal is pretty much the exact opposite of Mimi, as Hal is pretty frail yet blunt and is clearly harboring a variety of complicated emotions about their very existence. Even the fact that they wear boys' clothing and have a complex about that clearly feeds into this idea that they seem to live every day with those complicated feelings compared to Mimi's more carefree disposition. So it's ironic that Hal taking an interest in Sheena is acting as another catalyst to cause Mimi to act out more.
As for where those feelings will go…I'm not sure. The show is setting up a one-sided affection on Mimi's part. She is starting to get more territorial about Sheena's time and body if those lingering shots on the hands and face are anything to go by. But the show also establishes that Sheena has never seen Mimi like that. She definitely has a better understanding of romantic relationships and attachments, whereas this is all new for Mimi, so it makes sense that it would be more overwhelming for the latter. But the way the episode ends has me feeling a bit uncomfortable because the kiss the two share felt very romantically framed. I really hope the show isn't going in that direction because it would almost feel out of place or like a rewrite of their relationship up until this point. I worry that the more the show goes in that direction, the more frustrated and uncomfortable I'll be.
