Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first sit-down on Indian soil in seven years signaled a will to further repair ties and manage an unpredictable U.S. President Donald Trump.

But fundamental differences remain despite the good vibes flowing from the 10-nation BRICS summit in New Delhi.

In a 45-minute meeting on Saturday, the two leaders agreed to take a strategic and long-term perspective on the relationship, further promote cultural and business exchanges, and coordinate on regional and global issues.
