Brand new documentary, The State of Man

By Georgia Hitch

(ABC TV)

A new ABC documentary looking into the manosphere, The State of Man, airs tonight and host Marc Fennell shared how he approached the series.

"No matter who I’m talking to, whether I personally agree with them or not, I like to give people enough space to eventually say the quiet part out loud," he said.

"There’s a version of documentary making where you create big confrontations or stunts because they make great television. Sometimes people just shit stir. And look, I love watching that stuff. But it’s not really what I do.

"I try to approach people with clear eyes and a critical mind, but also genuine curiosity. I’m not sitting there waiting to catch somebody out. I actually want to know why they think what they think.

"The strange thing is that when you give people that space, sometimes you hear some truly cooked things."

You can watch The State of Man tonight, 8pm on ABC TV, or add it to your watchlist and stream free on ABC iview.

We're lucky enough to be joined by three experts today to cover a few different areas linked to the manosphere.

Dr Billy Garvey is a developmental paediatrician, researcher and author. He is the founder of Guiding Growing Minds, a social enterprise bringing evidence-based child development science to communities and families across Australia. He's also the co-host of Pop Culture Parenting podcast.

Genevieve Sheppard  is a former teacher and currently holds the position of principal advisor, respectful relationships education at Our Watch. For over a decade, she has supported governments, education systems and schools to embed evidence-based, whole-of-school approaches to preventing gender-based violence.

Dr Zac Seidler is a clinical psychologist and leading researcher in men's mental health. He is global director of men's health research at the Movember Institute of Men's Health, leading research focused on how masculinity, culture and social norms influence men's mental health and help-seeking behaviours.
