Earth has survived Saiyan invasions, Frieza, Cell, and Majin Buu, but its next big threat might actually be Oolong losing at rock-paper-scissors. That's where things stand as Dragon Ball Super: Beerus heads into episode #4, with the God of Destruction still making life miserable for everyone aboard Bulma's birthday cruise. Episode #3, "The God of Destruction Heads to Earth," revisited one of the most memorable parts of Dragon Ball, but this isn't simply a fresh coat of paint on the 2015 version.

Toei Animation has gone back and reworked the visuals, while the new six-episode format gives Beerus' arrival a much tighter pace. It also made some welcome changes to Vegeta's side of the story. Gone are the takoyaki-cooking and "Fun Bingo" dance scenes that had the Saiyan Prince practically begging Beerus to behave.

Even better, when Beerus knocked Bulma to the ground and triggered the iconic "My Bulma!" rage boost, Toei added a striking purple aura around Vegeta’s Super Saiyan 2 transformation, dropping a massive early tease for his future God of Destruction form, Ultra Ego, ahead of the already-announced Galactic Patrol anime arc.

With the series following a six-episode format, every instalment has a lot to cover, but this is arguably the biggest one yet. After all, the arrival of Super Saiyan God isn't just another new transformation for Goku. It's the moment Dragon Ball starts playing with an entirely different level of power.

Dragon Ball Super Beerus' Vegeta Looking Worried With Beerus Behind Him

Beerus has spent much of the enhanced edition reminding everyone why being a God of Destruction is such a big deal. Super Saiyan 3 Goku barely lasted a couple of hits, Majin Buu couldn't even protect his pudding, and Vegeta's rage-fuelled Super Saiyan 2 power wasn't enough to make the slightest difference. Even the combined efforts of Earth's strongest fighters have struggled to slow Beerus down. It's a pretty brutal reminder that the power gap between mortals and gods is enormous.

That's what makes the Super Saiyan God reveal so important. The crimson-haired form has been part of Dragon Ball Super's identity since the beginning, but its introduction also changed how Saiyan transformations and God Ki worked in the series. With Beerus searching for this legendary warrior since waking from his 39-year slumber, episode #4 finally brings the central promise of his visit to Earth into focus. For fans, it's a chance to revisit one of Goku's most memorable transformations in an enhanced version of the story.

That Ultra Ego Easter Egg Perfectly Sets Up The Next Dragon Ball Super Anime Arc

Dragon Ball Super Beerus Tease Vetega's Ultra Ego Form

Episode #4 is where things get really interesting for Toei Animation and animation director Tadayoshi Yamamuro. So far, the first three episodes have mostly featured short, one-sided fights, with Beerus barely needing to lift a finger to put Earth's strongest fighters in their place. From knocking out Super Saiyan 3 Goku in just two hits on King Kai's planet to brushing aside the Z Fighters and an enraged Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta without using even 10% of his power, the God of Destruction has made the power gap painfully clear.

But with Goku finally reaching Super Saiyan God, Dragon Ball Super: Beerus is about to move beyond those brief exchanges and into the arc's first full-length showdown, taking the fight from Earth's surface all the way into outer space.

There's also more going on here than simply giving the original 2015 anime a visual upgrade. Toei has been trimming filler, reworking scenes, and adding new animation cuts to connect this version of the story with what's coming next. Vegeta's purple aura in episode #3 is a particularly interesting touch, hinting at the God of Destruction path that eventually leads to Ultra Ego. And with Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol already confirmed to adapt the manga's Moro arc, this enhanced edition has a bigger job than revisiting Beerus' arrival. It's helping set up the next chapter of the franchise.
