Funeral held for Sandro Mazzola, as legendary Inter and Italy forward dies at 83

The funeral was held today for Italy and Inter legend Sandro Mazzola, with fans and representatives from numerous clubs in attendance for the final farewell.
The iconic striker turned 83 in November last year and passed away on September 19.
The funeral was held at the Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio this afternoon, with fans gathered outside holding flags and banners in his honour, and an Inter jersey draped over the coffin.
It was attended by representatives from many different clubs, including Milan, Juventus and Torino.
Mazzola honoured by clubs coming together
Despite the controversy over some Juventus ultras turning their backs during the minute’s silence for Mazzola yesterday, the Bianconeri delegation of directors Giovanni Carnevali and Ricky Massara were greeted with warm applause today by the Inter supporters as they arrived for the funeral.

“Your name will remain in the pages of our history. Your memory in the hearts of our fans. Ciao Sandro,” read a banner.
Former players in attendance included Aristide Guarnieri, Giuseppe Bergomi, Francesco Toldo, Ivan Cordoba, Esteban Cambiasso and the son of Inter legend Giacinto Facchetti, Gianfelice.
Like Franco Baresi for Milan, Mazzola was a one-club man, spending his entire career at Inter from 1960 to retirement in 1977.
He hailed from a true football family, as his father was Valentino Mazzola, the captain of the Grande Torino squad that perished in a plane crash in the Superga mountains in May 1949.
At that time, Sandro was only six years old, so barely remembered his legendary father.
Sandro and his iconic moustache went on to win four Serie A titles, two editions of the European Cup, two Intercontinental Cups, and was in the Italy squad that won the 1968 European Championship.
