The two boccia victories raised Indonesia's gold-medal tally to seven, enabling the contingent to achieve the target set by the Indonesian National Paralympic Committee.

Nagoya (ANTARA) - Indonesia's contingent officially met its target of winning at least seven gold medals at the 2026 Asian Para Games after Handayani and Gischa Zayana each claimed gold in the women's boccia finals on Wednesday.

The two athletes emerged as champions with decisive performances at the Nagoya City General Gymnasium in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, strengthening Indonesia's position at the fifth edition of Asia's largest multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities.

Handayani secured gold after defeating Malaysian contender Angeline Melissa 5-4. The 30-year-old trailed 1-4 after the first three ends before scoring four points in the fourth end to complete a comeback victory.

Meanwhile, Gischa captured gold following a tightly contested match against Hiu Lam Yeung of Hong Kong, China.

After taking the lead in the opening end, she and her opponent traded points over the next two ends before finishing the fourth and final end level. Gischa ultimately prevailed 6-5 on aggregate.

The two boccia victories raised Indonesia's gold-medal tally to seven, enabling the contingent to achieve the target set by the Indonesian National Paralympic Committee.

The other five gold medals included two won by swimmer Maulana Rifky Yavlanda in the men's S12 100-meter freestyle and S12 100-meter backstroke events.

I Kadek Dwi Purna Yasa claimed gold in the men's F57 discus throw, while Karisma Evi Tiarani secured gold in the women's T63 100-meter race. Para-cyclist Muhammad Fadli Imammuddin added another gold in the men's C4 4,000-meter individual pursuit.

Team Indonesia still has a chance to increase its gold-medal tally, as a number of top athletes are scheduled to compete in finals over the next few days.
