NSRI rescues missing man at Lamberts Bay Harbour

A man has been rescued after falling into Lamberts Bay Harbour and becoming partially trapped among the concrete Dolosse.

The incident happened on Wednesday evening, 9 September, prompting a search involving the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), police and members of the local community.

NSRI Lamberts Bay duty crew were activated at around 19:30 after police reported that a local adult man was missing at the harbour.

Friends of the man had raised the alarm after becoming concerned that he may have fallen into the water.

NSRI Lamberts Bay station commander Nickie van der Bank said police divers from the Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS) were placed on alert as the search operation got under way.

A coordinated search involving NSRI crew, police and community members eventually located the man among the Dolosse.

Man treated for hypothermia

The man had become partially entrapped between the large concrete structures and had to be recovered by rescuers.

He was treated at the scene for mild hypothermia.

Western Cape Government Health Emergency Medical Services (EMS) paramedics also attended and assessed the man.

Following a medical evaluation, he was released and did not require further medical treatment.

It appears the man fell between the Dolosse while walking along the harbour wall.

Swift response

The NSRI commended the swift response from its crew, police, emergency medical personnel and members of the local community who assisted during the search.

The incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with walking along harbour walls and near Dolosse, particularly after dark and in areas where a fall could result in someone becoming trapped or swept into the water.
