Djokovic exits Top 10 in ATP Rankings after eight years following US Open first-round upset

Former World No. 1 Novak Djokovic officially exited the Top 10 in the latest ATP Rankings released on Monday following his stunning first-round loss to Mariano Navone at the US Open in New York.

The 39-year-old Djokovic, a 24-time Major winner, lost 7-6(5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 to Argentina’s Navone in a match that lasted four hours 36 minutes. This was his first loss in the opening round of a Grand Slam since the Australian Open in 2006.

He is currently World No. 12.

Last year, the Serbian, a four-time US Open winner, had made it to the semifinals at Flushing Meadows before losing to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, the eventual champion. Following the failure to defend those ranking points this year, he will exit the ATP Top 10 for the first time since 2018.

Djokovic made his top 10 debut in 2007. Ten years later, during the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, he was forced to retire due to an elbow issue. He missed the rest of the season and was pushed out of the top 10 in November. But in 2018, he returned to the top 10 following his fourth title at the grass Major.

It also means that for the first time since October 2002, none of The Big Three members - Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic - are in the top 10 of the ATP rankings. Federer, who won 20 Majors, retired in 2022, while Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, bid farewell to the sport in 2024.

Alexander Zverev, who clinched his maiden US Open title, stayed in second place but reduced the gap between him and World No. 1 Jannik Sinner. The Italian did not play in New York this year due to a knee injury.

USA’s Ben Shelton, who lost to Zverev in the final, reached a new career-high ranking of four. Frances Tiafoe, who went down to Shelton in the semifinals, also achieved the best ranking of his career as he rose from 12th to eighth.

Former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev jumped from eighth to sixth after his run to the round of 16 while Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, Italy’s Flavio Cobolli and Australia’s Alex de Minaur all moved down.

Elsewhere, in the Top 100, USA’s Brandon Nakashima (16th) and Michael Zheng (88th), Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo (58th), Frenchmen Arthur Gea (63rd) and Titouan Droguet (89th), Portugal’s Jaime Faria (69th), UK’s Jan Choinski (74th) and Toby Samuel (94th) rose to new career-high rankings.
