Esmail served as writer, director and executive producer on the series, which won the Golden Globe for Best Television Series, Drama, a Peabody Award and the Writers Guild Award for New Series. Esmail also received Emmy nominations for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for his work on the show.

Esmail runs Esmail Corp alongside longtime partner Chad Hamilton and their television credits include Amazon’s Homecoming (2018–2020), starring Julia Roberts, as well as Briarpatch (2020), Gaslit (2022), Angelyne (2022) and The Resort (2022). Esmail also directed the first season of Homecoming.

On the film side, Esmail wrote and directed Netflix’s Leave the World Behind (2023), based on the novel by Rumaan Alam and starring Roberts, Mahershala Ali and Ethan Hawke. Esmail and Hamilton produced the film through Esmail Corp, with Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions executive producing.
