Indonesia reaffirms commitment to ocean-climate action at UN meeting

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to advancing ocean-based climate solutions through marine conservation, blue carbon initiatives, and coastal resilience during the high-level week of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted the country's expanded policy framework under Presidential Regulation No. 110/2025, which integrates the marine and fisheries sector directly into national climate change mitigation strategies, according to a statement released Friday.

"The ocean is a central element of climate action," Director General of Legal Affairs and International Treaties at the Foreign Ministry Ricky Suhendar said.

"International cooperation grounded in the principles of equity and a 'just transition' is essential to strengthening ocean-based climate solutions."

Speaking at the Annual Meeting of the Leaders of the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy on Sept. 23, Suhendar urged panel members to focus on two strategic priorities: securing sustainable ocean financing and advancing standardized ocean accounting.

He emphasized that targeted financing is required to translate international climate pledges into concrete action, while standardized ocean accounting remains crucial for evidence-based policymaking.

This year's meeting, themed "Ocean-Climate Leadership on the Road to COP31 UNFCCC," focused on accelerating ocean-related climate actions ahead of the COP31 conference in Antalya, Türkiye, scheduled for Nov. 9–20, 2026.

Established by Norway in 2018 with Indonesia as a founding member, the Ocean Panel currently comprises 19 nations representing approximately 50 percent of the world's coastlines and 45 percent of global Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs).
