Former academic Suahasil Nazara sworn in as new Finance Minister

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Seasoned economist and veteran public official Suahasil Nazara was sworn in as Indonesia’s new Finance Minister at the State Palace on Monday, succeeding Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa.
Suahasil steps into the top cabinet post after serving as Deputy Minister of Finance, a role he held across two administrations.
His appointment marks the third transition at the helm of the Finance Ministry under President Prabowo Subianto's administration, following Sri Mulyani Indrawati and most recently Purbaya, who took office in September 2025.
Born in Jakarta on November 23, 1970, Suahasil is a prominent economist, academic and public official with extensive experience in economic policy.
He obtained his Bachelor of Economics degree from the University of Indonesia (UI) in 1994, before pursuing further studies in the United States - earning a Master of Science from Cornell University in 1997 and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2003.
Suahasil began his career in academia as a economics lecturer at UI in 1999, achieving full professorship by 2009.
During his tenure at UI's Faculty of Economics and Business, he held several key leadership positions, including head of the Demographic Institute (2005–2008) and head of the Department of Economics (2009–2013).
Beyond academia, Suahasil actively contributed to public policy and national strategic bodies.
He served on the Minister of Finance's Assistance Team for Fiscal Decentralization (2009–2011) and held the post of Deputy Chair of the Regional Autonomy Implementation Supervisory Committee (KPPOD) from 2009 to 2015.
He also coordinated the Policy Working Group at the Secretariat of the National Team for the Acceleration of Poverty Reduction (TNP2K) under the Vice President's Office (2010–2015), served as a member of the National Economic Committee (KEN) Council (2013–2014) and remained active in the Indonesian Economics Scholars Association (ISEI).
On February 2015, Suahasil structurally joined the Finance Ministry as Acting Head of the Fiscal Policy Agency (BKF), before being officially installed as head of the agency on October 31, 2016 - a role he held until October 2019.
Recognized for his steady hand in macroeconomic management, Suahasil was elevated to Deputy Minister of Finance by President Joko Widodo in October 2019.
President Prabowo reappointed him to the position in October 2024 as part of the Red and White Cabinet, where he served alongside co-Deputy Minister Juda Agung until his appointment to the lead cabinet post.
