Nvidia has announced that it is opening an investigation into CEO Jensen Huang and his relationship with Megaspeed executive Alice Huang, who was reportedly recruited by China’s Ministry of State Security to spy on the company. A statement posted by the board of directors reads:

The NVIDIA Board is initiating an independent investigation in light of recent reporting that founder and CEO Jensen Huang has been the target of a foreign intelligence effort. A committee of independent directors, assisted by outside independent counsel, will oversee the investigation.

The Board prioritizes U.S. national and economic security, which is paramount to the interests of NVIDIA and its shareholders. While the Board has no reason to believe that either national security or NVIDIA secrets were compromised, the Board’s inquiry will examine all available information. Jensen fully supports the review and has committed to cooperating with it.

The Board has confidence in Jensen and his leadership team and will provide further updates as appropriate.

The New York Times reported last month that Huang had developed a “close relationship” with the Megaspeed executive, which he later admitted was romantic in nature in a memo to the company. US officials believe she was feeding information directly back to Beijing.

Megaspeed is a customer of Nvidia and is the subject of a Commerce Department investigation into whether it was smuggling AI chips to China. The company’s AI chips are viewed as crucial to the US maintaining technological supremacy. Both the Biden and Trump administrations have restricted their sale to China. President Trump has loosened those restrictions but still bars sales of Nvidia’s most powerful chips to Chinese firms, and the Commerce Department must approve individual firms to handle the chips.

Just as importantly, Jensen Huang has gotten quite cozy with Donald Trump, and there is concern about what insights into the administration’s deliberations around AI he may have been privy to. And whether any of that information may have been shared with Alice Huang, and eventually found its way to Beijing.
