All 7 Main Hulk Personas In Official Marvel Canon

Translate

Jared is a writer, editor, and Communications Studies graduate who loves popular nerd culture (almost anything to do with Marvel, DC, Star Wars, or The Lord of the Rings) and the interactive storytelling medium. Jared's first console was the PS1, wherein he fell for Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot.

Marvel fans who are only familiar with Hulk from the Marvel Cinematic Universe are severely missing out on how exceptional and layered the character actually is. Dr. Bruce Banner’s Hulk in the MCU is fairly one-dimensional, and it’s particularly grating that every attempt it makes to adapt any of the interesting personas Hulk possesses in Marvel Comics is lackluster. Hulk has experienced a tremendous amount of development in the last 64 years of his storied Marvel Comics legacy, and a massive aspect of the character is a system of personas/alters.

But no, Hulk isn’t merely a large, muscle-bound, gamma-irradiated monster whose purple pants’ waistband can somehow withstand his rage. For example, Donny Cates and Ryan Ottley’s Starship Hulk was an incredibly absurd and fascinating redesign involving Bruce’s mind as both a pilot and a command center, Hulk’s body as the literal starship, and Savage Hulk’s psyche fueling the body with anger. The main alters that inhabit Hulk, however, include:

Bruce Banner toasts with Brother Voodoo in The Infernal Hulk #9

Dr. Bruce Banner is Hulk’s alter ego, with the pair’s relationship being initially intended to mimic that of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. MCU-only Hulk fans might be surprised to learn that Marvel Comics’ Bruce suffers from dissociative identity disorder (DID), wherein all the Hulk alters spawn and are representative of repressed emotions and psychology. This wasn’t part of Hulk’s original characterization or origin story, of course, as it was conceived in The Incredible Hulk #227.

6 Green Hulk/Savage Hulk/The Big Guy

Savage Avengers Hulk Captain America Variant

The ordinary, ubiquitous persona who is traditionally depicted when Hulk manifests. Whether or not you consider Savage Hulk to be basic or iconic, Green Hulk represents Bruce’s childhood rage. Hulk looks quite different compared to how he normally does, of course, considering that Bruce and Hulk were torn apart, and Hulk’s body is now the vessel of Eldest, producing the Infernal Hulk.

5 Grey Hulk/Joe Fixit

The Hulk Who Fears Bruce Banner Returns - Joe Fixit

What began as an inking debacle has since become one of the greatest facets of Hulk’s characterizations via the Grey Hulk now being Joe Fixit, an identity separate from the Green/Savage Hulk. Joe Fixit has one of Hulk’s most distinct looks, especially when he’s dressed like a 1930s mobster, and demonstrates how drastically the character has evolved since his first appearance in The Incredible Hulk (1962) #1.

4 Devil Hulk

Immortal Hulk Devil Hulk Vertical

Devil Hulk is an ominous alter who is described as something of a protective father figure and was arguably the first alter to emerge, even if Immortal Hulk explicitly states that the original grey Hulk was the alter that would become Joe Fixit. Part of what makes Hulk such a captivating character is the retcons and lore that different storytellers have contributed to his several personalities, with the evolution of Devil Hulk becoming increasingly interesting and open to interpretation. Devil Hulk has also become many readers’ favorite Hulk system alter, and for good reason.

3 Professor Hulk

Professor Hulk Vertical

Professor/Smart/Merged Hulk is simply that—a cocktail of Bruce, Grey Hulk, and Green Hulk. Brains and brawn all melded, this should theoretically be the ideal or optimal Hulk and/or Bruce. No longer were Hulk’s personalities warring—until Hulk’s psyche was inevitably fractured once more, at least. A composed, in-control Hulk would seem like the least interesting of the bunch, and maybe that’s why Professor Hulk hasn’t reemerged lately, as there may be less to mine there. Nonetheless, Marvel Comics will always have him in its back pocket. That said, if Hulk appears in a book from Marvel’s Midnight universe, it’d be surprising to see his system express a series of alters that weren’t all terrifying goliaths in their own right.

2 Maestro

Maestro Hulk Old Man Logan Comic

While not a main Hulk persona per se, Maestro is a Hulk alter form in a possible future where Doc Green/Omega Hulk might have become a tyrannical ruler, had Doc Green not let the Extremis formula wane and sacrificed his intelligence. So, technically, Maestro could and would be a primary persona under these specific circumstances. Maestro, like every other Hulk alter, is a delicate yet nuanced examination of how far Hulk’s personas could ripple, resulting in terrific Hulk designs that we’d never see otherwise.

1 Green Scar

Green Scar wields an axe in Return To Planet Hulk cover

Green Scar is Hulk when he was the Gladiator Emperor of Sakaar, and is more or less akin to Professor Hulk, only Hulk is the dominant psyche, not Bruce. In Green Scar’s case, this melding of identities and alters was born out of desperation and survival. It is also through Green Scar that we received the epic World Breaker Hulk. This Hulk is obviously quite niche, given how Green Scar is tied fairly exclusively to the events of the Planet Hulk storyline, but there’s a low likelihood of him ever being shelved for long due to how popular this iteration of the character is.

Bruce Banner, AKA the Hulk, is one of Marvel's most iconic heroes. The character, who shifts between a mild-mannered scientist and a brutish green brawler, has starred in several live-action and animated movies and TV shows across seven decades and counting.
