A runaway senior police officer suspected in the double murders of Nairobi lawyer Kyalo Mbobu and clinical psychiatrist Dr Victoria Mutiso will be held for two weeks as police conclude investigations into his role in the killings.
On Monday, the Milimani Law Courts allowed the police to detain Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang for 14 days to conclude the probe.
Sang was arrested on October 24, 2026 in Eldoret for the suspected killings after being on the run for 10 months.
Senior Principal Magistrate Paul Mutai allowed the application by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), noting that the police had raised serious issues that required more time to investigate.
The prosecution had sought more time to interrogate Sang, conduct searches, pursue possible recoveries and complete investigations before charging him in connection with the two killings.
However, Sang’s lawyers opposed the application, arguing that other suspects had already been charged and that the matters were active before the courts.
Sang was arrested over the weekend in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, after detectives traced him in an intelligence-led operation.
Ballistic examination
He was subsequently transported to Nairobi and detained at Kilimani Police Station pending arraignment.
In an affidavit sworn by Corporal Romana Oduor of the DCI's Homicide Investigations Bureau, the police said they suspect that Sang was involved in the July 29, 2026, fatal shooting of Dr Mutiso in Upper Hill, Nairobi.
Investigators told the court that ballistic examination linked cartridges and a bullet recovered during investigations to a Mini Jericho pistol, serial number 47302127, which they said had been issued to Sang.
The court was also heard that Dr Mutiso had reported an earlier incident on July 7, 2026, when two armed men riding a motorcycle allegedly confronted her near Junction Mall along Ngong Road and pointed a gun at her.
She escaped and reported the incident at Kilimani Police Station.
Detectives further allege that Sang played a key planning role in the September 9, 2025, murder of lawyer Mbobu.
Other suspects in both cases have already been charged before the High Court.
The prosecution argued that some suspected accomplices remained at large, raising concerns about possible interference with evidence, collusion and flight.
Police also described Sang as a flight risk, alleging that he deserted his workstation and went into hiding following the killings.
The 14-day detention will also allow investigators to recover potential evidence, as well as facilitate a mental assessment of the accused before plea-taking.
The matter will be mentioned on November 9, 2026.
