Mutants tend to have really overpowered abilities in the Marvel Universe, but the X-Men's new mutant ally is powerful on a whole new level. Apart from the intense discrimination they face, mutants also endure a cruel genetic lottery that dictates their everyday lives. Countless mutants are stuck with physical deformities or deeply inconvenient afflictions that offer no combat advantage, while a select few inherit world-bending gifts that make them living gods among mortals. Where a large part of the mutant community struggle with useless extra appendages or destructive abilities they can't control, Storm can control the weather, Jean Grey can fly, and Wolverine is immune to all injuries and diseases.
Certain extraordinary mutations are particularly useful because they can grant a life of luxury. Blink's teleportation eliminates the daily stress of commuting and gives her immediate escape from all threats. Darwin possesses reactive adaptation, which guarantees flawless physical health and removes the basic human need for food or sleep. Telepaths like Emma Frost can tell if people are telling the truth, and self-healing mutants like Wolverine are unfamiliar with illnesses and permanent injuries. If it weren't for the immense power inflation in the Marvel Universe, these mutants would be untouchable in regular society.
Other mutations have less universal applications, but their unique traits make them incredibly useful in very specific cases.
Repent Can Transform Any Liquid Into Holy Water
Uncanny X-Men #36; Written By Gail Simone; Art By Luciano Vecchio & Matt Wilson
In Uncanny X-Men #36, Marvel's mutant exorcist Repent reveals one of his most powerful abilities: converting any liquid into genuine holy water. Repent's holy water transmutation is useless against most of the X-Men's villains, but considering how many demonic forces exist in the Marvel Universe, his unique talent can be exceptionally lethal. Literal demons from hellish dimensions or a malevolent spirits from other planes of existence may think twice before crossing paths with Vincente Herrera, who's already so experienced in his duties that he doesn't hesitate to exorcise the dragon Wyvern from Gambit's body.
Repent doesn't conform with the ability to create true holy water. Since he was a young child, Vincente Herrera has accumulated an impressive degree of expertise in religion and spirituality, losing one arm and one eye along the way. Hellborn spirits often employ elaborate illusions to hide within innocent mutant vessels, yet Repent sees through their deceits to pinpoint exactly which kind of demon they are and how to banish them. Although the process isn't easy by any means, as Rogue and Gambit now know, Repent has the precise ritual required to expel each sinister being.
Repent Would Be An Essential Asset Against Many Of The Marvel Universe's Deadliest Villains
Repent Should Be On The X-Men And The Avengers' Speed Dial
Repent could be unstoppable against most of Marvel's supernatural villains thanks to his virtually infinite supply of holy water, which allows him to banish, kill, or at least injure demonic entities. Major mystical antagonists like Blackheart, Belasco, Satannish, and Madelyne Pryor may not be seriously affected by it, but hordes of evil spirits and vampiric legions could find their occult protections completely useless against Repent's transmutation. And if holy water isn't effective enough, the rest of Repent's library of spiritual knowledge and abilities can make him a one-man army against these threats.
Parallel to Repent's exorcism of Gambit's Wyvern spirit in Uncanny X-Men, Steve Rogers and Doctor Doom find their souls trapped in Hell in Marvel's Armageddon, where they leave their differences aside to lead a rebellion against the supreme lord of the underworld, Mephisto, in his own realm. Repent could easily help turn the tide of this hellish war, using his unlimited holy water to weaken Mephisto himself and disintegrate the endless legions of creatures that serve him. While Repent may not be interested in battles of this scale, the X-Men may want to keep his contact in case another Blood Hunt-level event begins.
