CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani, widely touted as a potential rival to Gianni Infantino for the role of FIFA president, is set to run for re-election according to media reports on Thursday.

According to the reports, the Canadian businessman told staff that he intends to run for a third term as the head of the organisation, which is reponsibe for footballl in North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

If he were to do so, he would be ruled out as a potential successor to Infantino. CONCACAF elections are scheduled for early next year, before the FIFA elections in March.

Montagliani has been seen as candidate to rival Infantino, having broken away from him during Infantino’s failed bid to introduce private investment into the FIFA World Cup. He was previously viewed as an ally of the Swiss administrator.

Ex-Tottenham Hotspur player Ramon Vega is currently the only confirmed challenger to Infantino, with candidacy open until November 18.
