Semenyo helps chaotic Manchester City beat Sunderland despite Brobbey hat-trick
Manchester City and Sunderland shared eight goals in a madcap contest that Enzo Maresca’s side won 5-3 to stay top of the Premier League table with five wins from five.
Antoine Semenyo’s two goals either side of half-time, plus strikes by Enzo Fernández, Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland sealed the victory for City, although they were given several scares by Sunderland.
Brian Brobbey scored a hat-trick for the visitors – the first time since Jermain Defoe in 2016 a Black Cats player has netted three goals in a Premier League game – with the visitors levelling the scores at 1-1 and 2-2 before reducing the deficit to 4-3.
An acrobatic goalline clearance from Rúben Dias maintained City’s lead in the second half, before Haaland scored his first ever goal against Sunderland to make it 5-3, the Black Cats falling short of a famous result at the Etihad Stadium.
