Dhanush postpones ‘OM’ release 'out of immense respect' for Rajinikanth

Dhanush’s upcoming Tamil film 'OM,' directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, will no longer release on October 16 as originally planned. The film was scheduled to arrive in theatres worldwide a day after Rajinikanth’s 'Jailer 2.

' The makers have now decided to postpone the release to avoid the back-to-back release and a crowded festive season.Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Dhanush officially announced the postponement, citing his immense respect for Rajinikanth. He also confirmed that 'OM' will not be arriving during the Diwali window, as Suriya’s upcoming film 'Scene' has already been announced for the festival.

Dhanush explains why ‘OM’ release has been postponed

Sharing the announcement, Dhanush said shifting the release of a film comes with its own challenges but that the team decided to move 'OM' out of respect for Rajinikanth and 'Jailer 2.'“In times like these, shifting the release of a film comes with its own set of challenges. Our superstar, Rajinikanth sir, the man whom we have all admired and worshipped over the years has his film arriving on October 15th, just a day before ours. Out of immense respect for him, we have decided to postpone the release of our film, OM, to a later date,” he said.Dhanush also confirmed that OM will not target the Diwali release window this year.

‘OM’ to skip Diwali amid Suriya’s ‘Scene’ release

Explaining the decision, Dhanush said Suriya’s Scene has already been announced for the Diwali period. He pointed out that the makers of Scene announced their release date first and said the team behind OM wanted to respect that decision.“At the same time, we will not be arriving for Diwali this year either, as Suriya sir’s film has already been announced for the same date. In all fairness, they announced their date first, and we strongly believe that big films should have a mutual understanding and respect each other’s decisions, keeping the larger welfare of cinema and the industry in mind,” Dhanush said.A new theatrical release date for OM has not yet been announced. Earlier reports had suggested a possible late-November or early-December release, but the makers have not confirmed any new date.

Dhanush and Mammootty headline Rajkumar Periasamy’s ‘OM’

'OM' brings together Dhanush and Malayalam superstar Mammootty in prominent roles. The film also stars Sai Pallavi, Sreeleela and veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah. The project marks Dhanush’s collaboration with director Rajkumar Periasamy, who previously directed the National Award-winning 'Amaran'.
