Trump names Stephen Miller chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles after midterm losses

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that Stephen Miller would replace Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff, elevating a long-time loyalist and architect of his immigration crackdown days after Republicans lost control of Congress.
Miller, currently a deputy chief of staff, will take over on Monday. Wiles will move to Trump’s political operation, the president said in a post on Truth Social.
“I am pleased to announce that Mr. Stephen Miller, the current Deputy Chief of Staff of the Trump Administration, and one of my most trusted advisors, will become the Chief of Staff starting Monday, November 9, 2026,” Trump wrote.
He praised Wiles, saying she had done “an outstanding job”, but gave no reason for the change or details of her new responsibilities.
The announcement came three days after a bruising midterm election for Republicans, with Democrats winning control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Miller will assume the top White House staff role as Trump prepares to face an opposition-controlled Congress for the remaining two years of his presidency.
