PSL 2027 to clash with IPL again as PCB locks dates; BCCI also eyes early-March start

Pakistan Super League

The Pakistan Super League is heading for another scheduling collision with the Indian Premier League. The Pakistan Cricket Board on Thursday confirmed that PSL 12 will begin on March 18, 2027, and run until May 2, putting the tournament on a potential collision course with IPL 2027 for the second successive season. The eight-team PSL, which expanded from six teams this year, will retain its current format, with the final scheduled for May 2. While the IPL 2027 schedule is yet to be officially announced, indications are that its 20th season could also begin around the middle of March, raising the prospect of the two major T20 leagues once again competing for players, viewers and global attention.

IPL-PSL clash looms again

The scheduling overlap could once again create headaches for both leagues, with the IPL also looking at an earlier start in 2027.

IPL Governing Council chairman Arun Dhumal had previously indicated that the BCCI was exploring an early-March start, with the aim of completing the tournament by mid-May.“This year, IPL started around March 29 [28], and it was over by May 31,” Saikia told PTI. “Only thing which we are discussing is that during the fag end of the tournament after May 15... there is apprehension of having rainfall or pre-monsoon season starting.

On the other hand, there is hot weather which is not very conducive either for the players or for the crowds.“So therefore, there is a discussion going on in BCCI as well as in our IPL governing council regarding whether we can start the tournament a little bit earlier than the fag end of March.“From next year, we will make an effort and I have already instructed our general manager (games development) [former India fast bowler Abey Kuruvilla] to look for the windows, whether we can start it by 10th of March and conclude it by 15th of May.

So that there are no adverse weather conditions in the run-up to the playoffs and the finals of IPL 2027, which will be the 20th edition,'' Saikia added.

Another season, another IPL-PSL tussle

The scheduling overlap could prove particularly significant after the events of the previous season, when several overseas players withdrew from PSL commitments before joining IPL franchises as replacements.Among them was Australian pacer Spencer Johnson, who had been signed directly by Quetta Gladiators before pulling out, citing personal reasons, and subsequently joining Chennai Super Kings as a replacement for Nathan Ellis.Sri Lanka's Dasun Shanaka, who had been signed by Lahore Qalandars, also joined Rajasthan Royals as a replacement, while Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani withdrew from his Islamabad United contract to join Kolkata Knight Riders. Muzarabani was subsequently handed a two-year ban from the PSL.

PSL 2027 window locked

The March 18-May 2 window was finalised following consultations with the franchises and other stakeholders during the PSL Governing Council meeting in London on September 1.

The PSL will enter its second season with eight teams, after Hyderabad Kingsmen and the expansion of the competition in 2026. The previous season also marked another major shift, with the traditional player draft replaced by an auction for the first time.

Peshawar Zalmi ended a nine-year wait for the PSL title in 2026, defeating debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen in the final at Gaddafi Stadium. The match attracted a record crowd of 32,461.PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said the league would look to build on the momentum generated by the previous season.“PSL 11 showed the world what this league is capable of, thrilling moments that had the whole nation transfixed, record crowds, record broadcasts,” Naqvi said.“PSL 12 will raise the bar further. We are committed to delivering another outstanding season and look forward to seeing all eight franchises compete once again for the title,” he added.
