Halo: Combat Evolved Is Now Playable In Your Browser For Free

In 2001, you needed an Xbox to experience Master Chief's first adventure. Over the years, however, it's become increasingly convenient to play Halo: Combat Evolved. These days, you have your choice of anything from playing the Master Chief Collection on PC to embracing the contentious Campaign Evolved remake on PlayStation 5, leaving anyone interested in the series with little excuse to avoid it any longer.

If that still doesn't sound convenient enough, the latest way to play the game will. Halo: Combat Evolved can now be played without even inserting a disc or downloading a local file, and it all works better than you might expect.

X user mithcellhynes annnounced the launch of a Halo: Combat Evolved browser port, which makes both the game's campaign and the multiplayer mode playable in browsers like Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. The port is based on a recent Halo: CE decomp, which made it possible for the original Xbox version of the game (rather than the classic PC port) to run natively on PCs without the use of emulation.

Surprisingly, the frame rate isn't too shabby, although you may need decent hardware (and hardware acceleration enabled in your browser, which it should be by default). It's worth noting that it's still the Xbox game through-and-through, so if you're using a mouse and keyboard, you'll need to look at the keymapping guide in the bottom left to make sense of the in-game control prompts that assume you're using an Xbox controller.

While this port of Halo doesn't overhaul the game like some other versions, it's more of a testament to a general "why not?" attitude for game porting. People have been innovating with increasingly absurd platforms for Doom for decades, and in 2026, it feels like an appropriate time to try the same approach with more demanding games like Halo.

There's no guarantee that this version of Halo will stick around, as it's certainly not any kind of Microsoft-sanctioned release. If you're looking to check out what it has to offer, you might want to do so soon. Decomp projects don't fall afoul of any direct legal sanctions, so long as the game code and assets aren't actually being distributed, but this particular implementation of a decomp does seem to be doing a bit more of that troublesome distributing.

Unexpected PC ports have been popping up all over the place this year, some due to hard work and some due to the rise of AI-based vibe coding that can cut out a lot of the relevant diligence. An in-browser version of Halo: Combat Evolved is one of the most creative yet, so here's hoping that more surprises of a similar nature are in store.
