Forget Harry Potter, Prime Video's New Norse Mythology Series Is The Fantasy Event Of The Decade

HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series is all but guaranteed to dominate the fantasy genre as we roll into 2027, but Prime Video has a project on the way that really should be a much bigger deal. Of course, there is plenty of room to be excited about a wide variety of fantasy projects, but it always seems that one concept dominates over all the rest. This will be the second time J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books have been adapted for the screen, and this divisive fact alone has all eyes on HBO's new series. Still, don't let yourself be overly distracted.

Somewhere around a year after HBO's Harry Potter premieres its first season on December 25, 2026, we can expect that Prime Video's God of War TV show will be just about ready to go. This series will be based on the video game franchise of the same name, which initially follows the character Kratos through events from Greek mythology before carrying him into a new Norse world. This is where the TV show jumps in, picking up from the events of the 2018 God of War, in which Kratos and his son, Atreus, journey to fulfill the last wishes of Atreus' mother, Faye.

Prime Video is pretty confident in its God of War TV show, as it has already ordered two seasons, which are currently being produced back-to-back. Filming is expected to wrap sometime in the spring of 2027, so a premiere isn't likely until at least the end of the year. By this point, HBO's Harry Potter will have already begun to leave its mark, but God of War has all the potential in the world to outdo its predecessor.

The God Of War TV Show Is Nothing But Pure Potential

Fans of the God of War video game franchise certainly have a lot of reason to be excited for Prime Video's TV adaptation. While Harry Potter has already been adapted, the same is not true for God of War. A live-action film was announced back in the early 2000s, but nothing ever came of it. When the Norse mythology game installment was released in 2018, hope for a God of War adaptation was reignited, but it wasn't until 2022 that Prime Video announced plans to make a TV show.

It's now 2026, and the God of War show isn't quite yet a reality. This comes to a variety of creative and technical delays, but things have finally settled in. Perhaps the most encouraging bit of news is that fantasy and sci-fi legend Ronald D. Moore is creating this series. Known for Battlestar Galactica, For All Mankind, and Outlander, among others, Moore has a proven track record in adaptations and remakes. Add in the fact that Dave Bautista is playing the part of Kratos, and there's really no question that this show can be something spectacular.

Prime Video Is Making Itself HBO's Fantasy Rival

Given the resonant legacy of the Harry Potter franchise, this TV remake was always going to draw a lot of attention. Of course, it can't be denied that the "HBO Max" brand carries a lot of weight as well. Easily the most successful fantasy TV franchise of all time is Game of Thrones, and HBO has gone on to expand this world with further fantasy spinoffs like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon. Overall, the platform is dominating the genre, but Prime Video has put up a rather good fight.

Currently, Prime has the highest-budget fantasy TV show of all time ongoing. This is The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and though it's nearly just as controversial as Harry Potter, the series has most certainly allowed Amazon to leave its mark on the genre. The company also managed to snag the adaptation rights for Rebecca Yarros' highly popular Fourth Wing book series, which is another project with nothing but potential.

Add God of War to this mix, and it's really looking as if Prime Video is fully committing itself to the genre. Whether it can actually overcome HBO in legacy remains to be seen. God of War is guaranteed to play a part, and even if it never overcomes the popularity of Game of Thrones, we can at least hope this new series will rock the world just a bit further than Harry Potter.
