Miami Heat Fans Were Chanting "MVP" For Giannis Antetokounmpo Before His Debut Was Two Minutes Old

Translate

It took less than two minutes for Heat fans to start chanting “MVP” at Giannis Antetokounmpo. On Wednesday night at Kaseya Center, he was at the free-throw line in his Miami debut against the Timberwolves when the chant began. He is a two-time MVP, but this was his first game after a blockbuster trade from Milwaukee, and the Heat gave up a lot to get him. Miami missed the playoffs last season at 43-39, and the crowd made it clear what it expects now. He gave them plenty to cheer.

MVP Chants And A Hot Start In Miami

Antetokounmpo made a strong first impression. In the first quarter alone, he scored 14 points, shot 5-of-6 from the field and grabbed two rebounds.

The Heat landed him on June 22, along with Bobby Portis. To get the deal done, Miami sent Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis to Milwaukee, plus three first-round picks, one pick swap and one second-round pick.

Miami got a player with a long resume. In 13 seasons with the Bucks, the 31-year-old made 10 All-Star games and nine All-NBA teams, won a Defensive Player of the Year award and a title, and was Finals MVP. He also left as Milwaukee's all-time leading scorer.

He likes what he has seen in Miami so far. The team worked together for 22 days of camp and spent a lot of time together off the court, and he said “our chemistry is where it should be.” He believes the team will be even better by Game 40, as long as everyone stays healthy.

Where Giannis Stands In The MVP Race

The chants make sense, but last season makes his path harder. For nine years in a row he was named to an All-NBA team, and he made the first team in seven of them, playing about 67 games a year. Then in 2025-26 he played only 36 games. He hurt his left knee on March 15 and appeared in just six games after February 1, the fewest of his career. It was also the longest he has gone without a game in a decade.

If he stays healthy, a top-three MVP finish looks possible. Only five players in NBA history have had a season of at least 30 points, 11 rebounds and five assists a game: Giannis, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson. Giannis did it in each of the three seasons before the injury. The catch is that he has to play enough games to qualify for the awards.

That matters for Miami too, because the Heat could rise with him. If he plays like an MVP candidate, a top-four seed in the East looks realistic, though the conference is loaded and the gaps between playoff teams may be tiny.

He could also have some big scoring nights. Nobody has scored more points in the last decade, with 18,626, but he has reached 50 in a game only nine times. With the fast pace the Heat plan to play, a 10th time looks likely.

The crowd has already made its pick, and Giannis has 81 games left to back it up.
