Avengers: Doomsday still hasn't announced its full cast yet

Avengers: Doomsday hits cinema screens in just over two months, and there's still so much mystery surrounding the Marvel film. Despite being one of the biggest and most well-known film franchises worldwide, we still don't fully know who is going to star in the film.

During an in-conversation event following a screening of Avengers Endgame: Encore, director Anthony Russo told Deadline's editor-at-large Mike Fleming that he and brother Joe Russo haven't yet announced the full casting details.

"The cast is so large, and we've announced some of the cast, and we haven't announced some of the cast," he revealed.

"Joe and I are still very deep in the process of finishing Doomsday, where we say we're not done with the movie until they pry it out of our cold, dead hands."

He continued: "You know, it's a very iterative process for us from the time of conception all the way to final delivery of the film, so it is alive, and we are still working with it."

Anthony then joked that he "confuses himself" over which actors have and haven't been announced, so he has to "just slow down and stop talking."

So far, 30 stars from past Marvel movies have been confirmed to return, while there are some notable names missing from the cast list.

Fans were shocked to discover that Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to the franchise - but not as Iron Man, who died in 2019's Avengers: Endgame.

He is set to star as Doomsday's antagonist, Doctor Doom, with Anthony opening up about how they initially got him on board for Captain America: Civil War.

"From that first meeting with Robert, we were basically pitching him, 'Hey, Robert, we want you to come in and be Tony Stark to be the antagonist to Steve Rogers in Civil War,'" he recalled.

"It was a very scary idea to a lot of people that we would sort of put that character in a position of being considered the bad guy. But Robert is brave. He likes to be surprised, he likes to be pushed into difficult places. It was a very similar process thinking about [him] playing Victor Von Doom."

Avengers: Doomsday is released in cinemas on 16 December.
