Tineg-Malanas River swells, floods parts of Abra
SAN ILDEFONSO, ILOCOS SUR, Philippines — The Tineg-Malanas River continued to swell in Dolores, Abra, on Monday (Aug. 31) as persistent rains from the southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” caused flooding in surrounding low-lying areas.
The entire stretch of the Abra River, including its tributaries, was approaching alert level on Monday, according to the Abra River Basin Flood Forecasting and Warning Center of the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

An upward trend in water levels remained highly likely as heavy to intense rains were expected over the next 12 hours due to “habagat,” enhanced by Tropical Depression Pilandok.
Residents near rivers, mountain slopes, and low-lying areas were advised to watch out for possible flash floods and landslides if the situation worsens. —KENNETH P. TABIN/CONTRIBUTOR
