Will Forte Officially Teases 'MacGruber' Return: "It’s Non-Stop Fun for Me" [Exclusive]

Translate

Will Forte is still dreaming of a return to his breakout character. After a series of sketches, a big-screen movie, and a TV show, Forte still wants to don the mullet of MacGruber once more. Collider's Aidan Kelley caught up with Forte at the red-carpet premiere of his new movie, Coyote vs. Acme.

MacGruber, a spoof of the 1980s TV icon MacGyver, is a highly skilled government agent who can make "life-saving inventions out of household materials," as his theme song details. Unfortunately, he has to put his life together first. He first debuted as a Saturday Night Live sketch in 2007, before being spun off into his own movie in 2010. The character returned in a Peacock-original miniseries in 2021.

For Forte, the fun of MacGruber isn't just playing the character; it's who he plays it with. Several collaborators have worked with him since the SNL days, including writers John Solomon and Jorma Taccone and co-star Kristen Wiig. They're the reason he wants to wear the flannel again:

"MacGruber is the character I most want to do at every point of my life...It's just non-stop fun for me. The group that I get to do it with...John, Jorma, Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, Brandon Trost...Brandon Trost, who's the DP of this movie. It's just a wonderful group of people that I love being with, so it's fun to do, and as I get older all I want to do is do stuff with people I like, and have fun, and there's nothing more fun than doing that. Just big, stupid fun."

Forte also detailed how he thought an encounter between MacGruber and Coyote vs. Acme star Wile E. Coyote would go:

"It would be very one-sided, for one, because Wile doesn't talk, and MacGruber talks too much. And I feel like it would end in MacGruber somehow getting Wile exploded, and Wile suing MacGruber. I feel like that's how it would end. Maybe that's, you know, Coyote vs. MacGruber is the sequel?"

Coyote vs. Acme premieres in theaters today on August 28.

Who Does Will Forte Play in 'Coyote vs. Acme'?

Forte stars as lawyer Kevin Avery, who thinks he's landed the case of the century when cartoon character Wile E. Coyote hires him to represent him in his suit against the Acme Corporation, whose faulty products have failed him time and again while trying to apprehend his nemesis, the Road Runner. He's got his niece Paige (Lana Condor) and legal partners Sal Maltese (Tone Bell) and Dottie Jones (Martha Kelly) on his side, but it might not be enough to avoid being steamrollered by the all-powerful Acme, who've hired his old law school colleague, Buddy Crane (John Cena).

Coyote vs. Acme is in theaters now. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
