Tacloban City mayor, NBI tackle tighter safety, security measures

TACLOBAN CITY — Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez and newly assigned National Bureau of Investigation Region 8 Director Atty. Jeremy Lotoc discussed tighter security measures, including responsible firearm ownership and stronger cybersecurity in government agencies last Wednesday.

Romualdez, who chairs the Regional Peace and Order Council, raised concerns over unauthorized access to firearms, particularly by minors, amid recent shooting incidents in schools.

He stressed the need to ensure that firearms are kept out of the hands of people who are not legally qualified to possess or handle them.

The mayor and Lotoc also discussed strengthening cybersecurity measures in government offices and improving coordination among law enforcement and other government agencies in addressing peace and order concerns across Eastern Visayas.

Romualdez said closer coordination among agencies is necessary to make security efforts more systematic and effective, particularly as government authorities respond to emerging threats.

The meeting took place during Lotoc’s courtesy call on Romualdez at city hall.

Lotoc, a Tacloban native, became NBI- Eastern Visayas chief in July. Before assuming the post, he served as a witness in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. /gsg
