Oriental Mindoro house fire kills 2 siblings, injures grandmother


CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — Two young siblings, aged 7 and 11, were killed in a fire that destroyed their home in Barangay Barcenaga in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro on Thursday.
Their grandmother was injured and survived after jumping out of a window to escape the blaze. The siblings were found in their room, still embracing their pet dog.
Staff Sgt. Fernan Macuha of the Naujan Police Station said an overloaded extension cord powering an electric fan is eyed as the likely cause of the fire, which began at 10:30 p.m.

The victims’ mother is currently working abroad, while their father died nearly two years ago after being electrocuted while working as a lineman for the local electric cooperative.
Four of the children’s cousins, who were also in the house at the time, escaped unharmed.
In an interview with ABS-CBN Teleradyo, Naujan Mayor Henry Teves extended his sympathies and assured that the local government will cover all funeral and burial expenses of the victims./coa
