The Final Fantasy franchise has always let players get around the world map in style. Throughout the series' nearly 40-year run, there have been plenty of vehicles and modes of transportation for the adventuring party. Some have been conventional modes of transport, like ships, cars, and motorcycles.
Others have been on the more outlandish side, like dragons and transforming powerful summons. And, of course, there are always the airships. This list could easily have been full of 10 different kinds of airships. But that would be too obvious—we know that airships are cool, and we're only including the coolest. Instead, let's celebrate 10 of the most awesome, unique, and iconic vehicles to have ever graced the Final Fantasy franchise.
Chocobo From Any Final Fantasy
Does a Chocobo count as a vehicle? That depends on whether you consider a horse a vehicle. It's a mode of transportation. You sit on top of it. If you think that's stretching the definition, just wait until we get to the Final Fantasy 14 entry.
Whatever your stance is on Chocobos as vehicles, there's no denying that the large bird mounts are one of the most iconic modes of transportation in the entire series. Chocobos can run, fly, and even swim you to anywhere you want to be. Plus, you can race them, and they're adorable. What more could you possible want from your vehicle?
The Pirate Ship From Final Fantasy 5
Final Fantasy might be well-known for its airships, but the regular seafaring ships shouldn't be overlooked. Ships allow for further exploration beyond land, and open up the world at large. A ship is one of the first vehicles in the series in general, way back in the original game.
As far as ships go, the Pirate Ship from Final Fantasy 5 is especially memorable. This ship doesn't get an actual name beyond just "The Pirate Ship" or "Faris's Ship." But it plays an important role in the adventure, and it has something that makes it stand out among other ships in the series: It's pulled by a sea serpent called a Syldra.
Faris was raised with the Syldra as almost a sibling, making this a very sweet relationship. It also means this is one of the only games where it makes sense that the ship can travel anywhere without wind.
Literally Any Mount From Final Fantasy 14
Final Fantasy XIV is an MMO that's been going strong since either 2010 or 2013, depending on whether you consider the original launch the "official" one. Unsurprisingly, the game has amassed a huge collection of mounts and vehicles in the decade-plus years that it's been online. There are over 300 different vehicles, mounts, and other assorted rideable things and creatures in the game.
Of course, there are some awesome-looking options to choose from, like Landerwaffe the mechanical dragon, Epimetheus the Mad Max-esque war machine. Some, are more on the silly side, like the Monster Hunter collaboration Felyne Support Team Cart, which is exactly what it sounds like, or the cute propeller-driven steampunk Falcon.
But then you get into the most ridiculous and off-the-wall vehicle options. You can travel around the world getting beamed up by Pupu's spaceship, get carried like a kitten by the Magitek Death Claw, or hold on for dear life to the front of a giant Paissa just trying to make a living for his children. Take to the skies in a flying inflatable Moogle raft, a bulldozer, a chair, or a chair but being held by legendary dragon Bahamut. If you're looking for ways to travel in style, FFXIV is has literally hundreds of them.
The Regalia From Final Fantasy 15
The Regalia is the car that Noctis and his buddies drive on their road-trip through Final Fantasy 15, and it's definitely one of the most memorable vehicles in the series. The Regalia is as much a character in the game as the actual human characters. It's loosely based on a Rolls-Royce, and it's a convertible, but not just in the traditional sense.
The car can actually transform much more than just its roof. The Regalia can change into a rugged, off-road truck or, more impressively, into a slick airplane. (Coincidentally, you can also get the Regalia in FF XIV.)
The Eidolons From Final Fantasy 13
Summons have always played an important role in the Final Fantasy series, but Final Fantasy 13 took this to another level. The characters in that title are paired with their own personal Eidolons. Unlike in other games, though, Eidolons can also transform into different types of vehicles to work in unison with their summoners.
This is called their Gestalt form, and while all are awesome looking, two stand out: Snow's Shiva sisters change into an intricate motorcycle, and Sazh's Brynhildr transforms into an armored (and armed) car. The Eidolons' usefulness names them some of the best FF vehicles.
The Motorcycles From Final Fantasy 7
Cloud doesn't get to use his motorcycle for too long, but when he does, the brooding protagonist of Final Fantasy 7 looks right at home on it. The Hardey-Daytona is a black bike that Cloud steals from Shinra and rides through the streets in an exciting battle on the move.
This bike is actually not the only time Cloud's sated his need for speed on a cool motorbike. In Advent Children, Cloud rides the Fenrir, This three-wheeled bike has a compartment built in that, when opened, reveals sword pieces ready to be assembled. Technically, Cloud uses the Fenrir in Dirge of Cerberus, so it gets to share a spot with the Hardey-Daytona as one of the best Final Fantasy vehicles.
Balamb Garden from Final Fantasy 8
Balamb Garden acts as a main setting and a home base in Final Fantasy 8. The three-story-tall structure is where Squall and his companions attend classes and train.
The Garden was designed by Cid, which is an immediate tell-tale sign that it's not just a simple building. In fact, Balamb Garden is able to lift from the ground and fly around the world. Its mobility is limited, but its immense size and impressive stature makes this one of the most memorable vehicles in the Final Fantasy series.
The Ragnarok From Final Fantasy 8
The Ragnarok from Final Fantasy 8 is technically an airship, but calling it that is like calling a lion a cat. The impressive-looking flying vehicle isn't just an airship like in the other Final Fantasy games. Instead of just flying around the world map and rising over mountains, the Ragnarok sets its sights on the stars—literally.
The airship is actually a starship that heads out into space as part of the story. The Ragnarok is also a social hub for the characters, and a place where you can take a break from the story to play some cards. Plus, the music that plays while on board the airship is one that most players can never get tired of.
The Highwind From Final Fantasy 7 Revelation
The Highwind is the iconic airship from Final Fantasy 7, transporting the characters around the world with ease. The remakes take the vehicle a step further, transforming the Highwind into an aerial base.
The upcoming finale to the trilogy of remakes, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, will place a spotlight on the airship. The Highwind will be transformed into an important central hub for the party to gather, hang out, and even race Chocobos. Now, whenever players want to explore a location, they don't have to find a place to land the airship—all they have to do is skydive off it.
The airship may now also have weapons in the coming game, making it even more impressive. Once Revelation is released, the Highwind may become the best vehicle in the Final Fantasy franchise.
