Minister calls for strict supervision of narcotics disposal

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs, Djamari Chaniago, has called for strict supervision of the destruction of narcotics evidence to ensure that none of the material is left outside the incinerators.

“That is necessary to ensure the drugs are destroyed. They must not be left scattered,” Djamari said at a press conference on drug-evidence destruction in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to the minister, destroying 1.3 metric tons of narcotic evidence in Batam, Riau Islands Province, took about 24 hours, requiring strict supervision throughout the process.

The same oversight is needed for the destruction of 34.74 kilograms of solid narcotics and 2,156.4 liters of liquid narcotics by Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency (BNN), he said.

Djamari praised BNN and other agencies for their cooperation in investigating drug cases and destroying seized narcotic evidence, including the military, police, and Customs.

He said strong inter-agency cooperation should serve as a warning to parties attempting to smuggle illegal goods into Indonesia.

“This proves that working together will certainly produce better results,” he added.

BNN Chief Senior Commissioner Suyudi Ario Seto said the entire drug-evidence destruction process was conducted carefully and thoroughly under strict supervision by various authorities.

“The destruction method also meets safety standards to ensure that no adverse impacts or pollution affect the surrounding environment,” he said.

The destruction underscored the government’s commitment to eradicating illicit drug networks and reducing the risk of abuse that threatens communities, he said.

Suyudi noted the destruction also implemented President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita agenda, particularly its seventh priority on political, legal and bureaucratic reform and stronger efforts against corruption and drugs.
