Marcos pays final respects to former PM Cesar Virata

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has paid his final respects to former Prime Minister Cesar E.A. Virata and remembered his years of dedicated public service.

Virata served as Minister of Finance from 1970 to 1986 and as Prime Minister from 1981 to 1986 under the administration of then-President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr.

Marcos and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos visited Virata’s wake at Heritage Memorial Park in Taguig City on Wednesday before they flew to Singapore for a five-day working visit.

Virata died on October 2 at the age of 95.

In a social media post, Marcos honored Virata for his quiet dignity, discipline, and strong sense of duty to the country.

“I paid my final respects to former Prime Minister Cesar Virata, a man who devoted many years of his life to our country and worked alongside my father in public service,” the president said.

“I will remember him not only for the many years he gave to the nation, but for the quiet dignity, discipline and sense of duty with which he lived his life,” he added.

He was recognized for his contributions to the country’s economic policies, international financial relations, fiscal management, and corporate governance.

“To the entire Virata family, the First Lady and I offer our deepest sympathies. Thank you for a lifetime of service, Prime Minister. Rest in peace,” Marcos said.
