How much does it cost to: Take your family to visit Robben Island?

Translate

Robben Island is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the city of Cape Town. However, being able to visit the destination is very weather dependant.

Here’s a look at how much it would cost to take a family of four to visit this historic site.

COST OF FERRIES TO VISIT ROBBEN ISLAND

Visiting Robben Island is one of South Africa’s most popular heritage experiences, offering families the chance to walk through the same prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his incarceration.

The cost of taking a family of four to Robben Island in 2026 will depend on whether you are a South African resident or international visitor.

The standard tour ticket for South African adults is R400 each, while children under 18 pay R210.

For international visitors, the adult ticket rises to R600, and children pay R310.

This price includes the ferry from Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, a bus tour of the island, and a guided prison tour led by former political prisoners.

A family of four made up of two adults and two children will therefore spend R1 220 (if South African) or R1 820 (if international).

The ticket price is comprehensive, covering the return ferry trip from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront, a bus tour of the island’s historical landmarks, and a guided walk through the maximum-security prison.

Tours typically last about 3.5 hours, with departures at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00, and 15:00 daily.

Families should budget extra time for queuing and boarding, as the ferries are often full and weather conditions can cause delays or cancellations.

It is important to note that if the weather is not good, the ferry will not go out on that day or at that time.

ADDITIONAL COSTS TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION

Beyond tickets, there are additional costs to take into consideration.

Parking at the V&A Waterfront averages R20 to R30 per hour, and meals at the Waterfront restaurants can add R100 to R200 per person. For a family of four, food and parking could easily add R500–R800 to the day’s expenses.

If traveling from Durban, Johannesburg or any of the other provinces, transport becomes the largest cost and this will vary. Petrol for the ±1600 km round trip is around R3 500 to R4 000, while flights for four can exceed R12 000 – R14 000.

Special promotions occasionally reduce costs. In 2026, the NextGen Heritage Free Pass allowed South African children under 15 to enter free when accompanied by a paying adult, cutting the family ticket price by nearly half during winter and spring months.

A Cape Town-based family of four can expect to spend R1 500 to R2 600 for tickets, plus R500 to R800 for food and parking, making the outing cost R2 000 to R3 400.

For families outside of Cape Town, including transport, the trip rises to R6 000 to R16 000 depending on whether they drive or fly.
