OCD warns NIR of potential ashfall from Kanlaon volcano

MANILA, Philippines — The Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) on Saturday warned the public of potential ashfall from Kanlaon volcano on Negros Island.

In an advisory, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the volcano emitted voluminous ash at 11:23 a.m, which rose 150 meters above the summit crater.

Phivolcs said the plume drifted toward the southeast brought by strong winds.

The OCD – Negros Island Region (NIR) advised nearby communities in the NIR to take precautions for potential ashfall reaching them.

The state seismologist earlier recorded superheated plume activity at the crater of Kanlaon volcano between 11:05 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. on Friday.

The volcano remained under Alert Level 2, indicating moderate level of unrest. Meanwhile, entry within the four-kilometer danger zone and flights in the vicinity of the volcano remain prohibited. /jpv
