Mark Mortimer, Former ‘Another World’ Star, Dies at 59

Mark Mortimer, an actor best known for his role as Nick Hudson on the soap opera Another World, died after a battle with cancer. He was 59.

Mortimer died Sept. 23 “surrounded by the people he loved most, after a fearless journey with cancer,” according to an obituary written by his family and posted online by Moss-Norris Funeral Home in St. Charles, Illinois.

Mortimer played Nick Hudson on Another World starting in 1996. He was the third actor to take on the role, following on the heels of Justin Chambers and Kevin McClatchy. He played the role in 81 episodes, until the NBC soap ended its 35-year run in 1999.

He also guest-starred on a 1999 episode of Spin City. His last credit, per IMDB.com, was the 2005 film Nowhere Man.

“Mark Mortimer lived many lives in one lifetime,” his family wrote in the obit. “He was an Army veteran, a model, an actor, an entrepreneur and a builder. He was a husband, father, son, brother and friend. He was curious and determined, willing to take chances, start something new, change direction and figure things out along the way. But of all the titles Mark held throughout his life, the two that mattered most to him were husband and dad.”

Born on April 15, 1967, in Yorkville, Illinois, Mortimer was married to wife Christie for 25 years and they later welcomed a daughter, Hunter.

Mortimer also was a co-owner in IOC Construction and helped build it “not simply as a business, but as a family. He believed in hard work, relationships, loyalty and taking care of people. Many of the people who entered Mark’s life through work became lifelong friends,” his family wrote.

He was diagnosed with cancer in 2024, but apparently didn’t let that slow him down. He and Christie founded the Integrative Access Foundation to give people with cancer access to integrative therapies that might be too costly for them.

“Mark showed those who loved him that courage is not the absence of fear,” his family wrote. “It is choosing to live, love, laugh, hope and trust God even when the road ahead is uncertain.”

In addition to Christie and Hunter, survivors include his mom, Sharlene Pearson; father, Emil Mortimer; and siblings Micheal Mortimer, Michele Doyle, Martin Mortimer, Melissa Gassmann, David Mortimer and Tyler Mortimer.
