Bakom urges public to support Police in wiretapping probe

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the Government Communications Agency (Bakom) Syahganda Nainggolan has called on the public to maintain unity and support the Indonesian National Police (Polri) in investigating the alleged wiretapping of President Prabowo Subianto and several prominent figures.

“Let all elements of the nation support the President and the police in taking firm action and maintaining public order,” Syahganda said in Jakarta on Thursday (5/11) evening.

He cautioned against any ambition for power that tolerates political practices capable of dividing the national unity.

Syahganda said he believes any action that potentially threatens the security, safety, and authority of the President must be investigated objectively and transparently, and dealt with firmly in accordance with prevailing law.

According to him, law enforcement must be the main foundation in handling the case.

The alleged wiretapping of President Prabowo, a number of political party leaders, community figures, businesspeople, and journalists was disclosed by police in Jakarta on Tuesday (3/11).

In the disclosure, police alleged that the wiretapping involved a four-star police general identified by the initials LSP, along with several senior police officers identified as AS/ASN, EH, and SU. They have been named suspects.

Meanwhile, President Prabowo Subianto expressed concern over the alleged wiretapping involving several senior police officials.

The statement was delivered by State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, in his capacity as the President’s spokesperson, at a press conference at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday (4/11).

“He (President Prabowo) is deeply concerned. An institution under the President carried out such an effort (wiretapping). Of course, that is very concerning. Once again, it is very worrying for the interests of all of us,” Prasetyo said.

He explained that wiretapping of the head of state is closely tied to sensitive information that, if misused, could endanger the integrity and interests of the nation.

The police are still investigating the case. National Police Chief General Suyudi Ario Seto has formed a special team to look into the information and the alleged wiretapping.

“As a proactive response and a sign of the institution’s seriousness, Polri leadership, in this case the National Police Chief, has formed a special team to respond to this information and these issues and conduct an in-depth examination, led directly by the Head of Bareskrim,” said Head of the Public Information Bureau of the Polri Public Relations Division, Brig. Gen. Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, in Jakarta on Thursday.

Trunoyudo said the special team will examine the various pieces of information carefully and professionally in accordance with prevailing law. The in-depth process will take time.

He stressed that Polri will ensure that all stages of the case handling are carried out objectively and accountably.

“The team’s findings will later be conveyed to the public transparently and accountably, in line with the progress of the case handling process,” Trunoyudo said.
