These two sides went into the autumn resumption of the inaugural edition of the competition sitting third in the respective Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere tables, after eventful starts in the summer.

Australia, with Les Kiss taking over from Joe Schmidt, fell to Ireland in last-gasp fashion and were downed by a France comeback before recovering to thrash Italy.

Since then, they have won two-Test series against both Japan and Argentina, though their dismal record in the Bledisloe Cup continued with back-to-back defeats by the All Blacks, who have now won 13 straight matches against their rivals.

Now less than 12 months out from the 2027 Rugby World Cup, this is a meeting between two sides who are projected to clash in the quarter-finals Down Under next year.

England’s preparations to face the Wallabies have been overshadowed by explosive reports of a rift in camp over the summer between the players and head coach Borthwick, whose contract was recently extended through the 2028 Six Nations as he also received more public support from RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney.

After this, England face a reunion with Eddie Jones as Japan visit south-west London, before a showdown with the All Blacks precedes a play-off final against an as-yet unknown Southern Hemisphere opponent.
