Cyclist ‘lucky to be alive’ after driver who forgot glasses crashes into her

A “reckless driver” crashed into a cyclist, leaving her with multiple bone fractures in Hull.

The woman was cycling along Holderness Road near the junction of Barnsley Street when Uchenna Agunenye, 48, of Jalland Street, Hull, swerved from the main road into the cycle lane and knocked her into some railings on the nearby pavement.

Police on patrol and members of the public assisted the woman while emergency services arrived.

Agunenye failed a roadside eyesight test. Further lines of enquiry were conducted at the scene, and it was identified that the conditions of his driving license were in fact to ensure he wore glasses and he was arrested.

He later admitted to forgetting to wear his glasses and that this is what caused him to collide with the cyclist.

Agunenye was sentenced at Hull Crown Court on Tuesday, 15 September, to 14 months suspended for 12, disqualified from driving for two years, disqualified until he has passed an extended test, ordered to conduct 180 hours of unpaid work and pay the cyclist £187.
