Beloved Netflix series won't return to the streamer as show is cancelled after 7 years

Netflix has sadly cancelled the romantic drama series Sweet Magnolias after five seasons and seven years, with star JoAnna Garcia Swisher posting a touching tribute after the news was announced.

The show follows three women from South Carolina who have been friends since childhood, trying their best to navigate life and love. But the news isn't all sad. In fact, you could say it is bittersweet.

That's because a new show has already been announced as a replacement, with Garcia Swisher and showrunner Sheryl J Anderson working on it together.

Based on Lauren Edmondson's novel, Ladies of the House will kick off when the charismatic owner of a family winery dies unexpectedly.

The official synopsis reads (via Tudum): "His wife and two adult daughters must battle through their issues with each other in order to confront challenges with the business, their extended family, and the men in their lives.

"Good friends and good wine will aid in the journey to hang on to the winery, but what matters most is that they find a way to hang on to each other."

In her tribute to the show on Instagram, Garcia Swisher explained that it came to her during a difficult time in her life, and that it gave her "somewhere to go" and "belong".

"This show was always about showing up for the people you love. About friends becoming family. About life not turning out exactly the way you planned, and choosing to build something beautiful anyway," she wrote.

"To every single person who made this show, and every single person who watched it, loved it, shared it, and found a little piece of themselves in Serenity…thank you. You will never fully know what you gave me."

In the Ladies of the House announcement, the actor said that she "fell in love" with the novel from her first read, and is "beyond excited to continue to tell meaningful, female-driven stories".

Sweet Magnolias can be streamed in full on Netflix now, while Ladies of the House will come to platform at a later date.
