President Prabowo mourns the passing of Guruh Soekarnoputra

Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has expressed his condolences over the death of Mohammad Guruh Irianto Soekarnoputra, a senior politician and prominent cultural figure who died in Jakarta on Saturday morning at the age of 73.

Prabowo conveyed his condolences in a post on his official Instagram account, @prabowo, accompanied by a pencil sketch of Guruh.

“Innaa lillaahi wa inna ilaihi raaji’uun. My deepest condolences on the passing of Mohammad Guruh Irianto Soekarnoputra,” Prabowo said in the post.

Guruh, the youngest son of Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno, and former First Lady Fatmawati, died at 4:16 a.m. Western Indonesia Time at MRCCC Siloam Hospitals Semanggi in South Jakarta.

His death was first confirmed by PDI Perjuangan Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto, who said Guruh had received intensive medical treatment after his health had declined over the past year.

According to his nephew, Didi Mahardika, Prabowo had previously requested that Guruh receive intensive medical care, citing his significance as a cultural figure and a part of Indonesia’s history.

Guruh was widely known as an artist, choreographer, musician, and politician. He served as a member of the House of Representatives (DPR) for PDI Perjuangan during the 1992–1997 and 1999–2024 terms.

Beyond politics, Guruh played a prominent role in Indonesia’s cultural landscape. He founded arts organizations including Swara Maharddhika and GSP Production and was also involved in the progressive rock group Guruh Gipsy alongside musicians including Chrisye and Keenan Nasution.

Guruh’s body is currently lying in state at the family residence in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. He is scheduled to be buried beside his mother, Fatmawati, at Karet Bivak Public Cemetery in Jakarta, with the timing to be decided by the family.

He is survived by his older sister, PDI Perjuangan Chairperson and former President Megawati Soekarnoputri, and members of the extended Sukarno family.
