Typhoon Dujuan set to arrive in Kanto during Silver Week

Large Typhoon Dujuan advanced northward over waters south of the Tokai region on Sunday morning and is expected to reach the Izu Islands and the Kanto region between Monday afternoon and early Tuesday morning before moving east, off the coast of the Tohoku region.

The Japan Meteorological Agency urged residents in the Izu Islands and Kanto, as well as Pacific coastal areas of Tokai and Tohoku, to remain on high alert for torrential rain, violent winds and high waves.

As of 9:00 a.m. Sunday, the year’s 25th named storm was moving northwest over waters south of the Tokai region at 10 kilometers per hour. It had an atmospheric pressure of 970 hectopascals at its center, with maximum sustained winds of 35 meters per second (126 kph) and maximum gusts of up to 50 meters per second.

The storm zone had wind speeds of at least 25 meters per second within a 110-kilometer radius, as well as a gale-force zone with winds of 15 meters per second or higher extending up to 800 kilometers to the northeast and 440 kilometers to the southwest.

In the 24 hours through 6:00 a.m. Monday, up to 250 millimeters of rainfall was forecast for the Izu Islands, 200 mm for Kanto and 150 mm for Tokai.

In the subsequent 24 hours through 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, rainfall could reach up to 400 mm in Kanto and the Izu Islands, 300 mm in the Tokai region and 200 mm in Tohoku.

With the typhoon coinciding with Japan’s Silver Week holidays through Wednesday, the storm is likely to disrupt transport networks and wreak havoc on cultural events.

The Tokyo Game Show, which began Thursday, announced the cancellation of Monday’s program, shortening the five-day video game extravaganza by a day.
