Doctor Strange's Female Replacement Officially Revealed By Marvel

Marvel's new female Doctor Strange fully steps into her superhero role with the reveal of her official costume. Stephen Strange is widely considered the absolute best Sorcerer Supreme to ever live, but his formidable mystical authority isn't defined by one title, and his status as Marvel’s top sorcerer stays completely intact even without it. Strange stands out due to his intrinsic human attributes, such as his flawless photographic memory, his background as a world-class neurosurgeon, and an obsessive drive that allows him to master complex spellcraft faster than any practitioner in history.

Doctor Strange has seen an extensive revolving door of successors inherit the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme, yet he's had few direct successors who take over his duties without being bound to that title. When Strange steps away or dies, the universe demands a replacement to protect the dimensional barriers, leading to classic Sorcerer Supreme substitutes like Doctor Voodoo, Jericho Drumm, and even a deceptive Loki. Looking strictly at the rare instances where individuals stepped up as temporary replacements to run Strange's affairs without officially claiming the mantle from the Vishanti, the list narrows down to his closest inner circle.

Paulina is the human character who has adapted to her Origin Box powers the best in Ultimate Impact: Reborn, compared to the panicked Vin Lerner and the twisted Orson Boothe. In Ultimate Impact: Reborn #5, Paulina confronts Mr. Boothe in his office, and Boothe uses the Purple Man's mind-control powers to command Paulina to jump off the building. Luckily, Paulina's mystical Sightseer abilities immediately activate, and she starts flying instinctually, summoning her own take of Doctor Strange's costume and upgrading her phoropter to a colorful version of the original device.

Paulina's Sightseer costume is a gorgeous reinvention of Doctor Strange's traditional clothing. Instead of blue robes with a red cloak, Paulina wears a blue tunic framed by thick gold trim that flows down into a segmented, skirted lower half. A flowing cape is attached to the tunic underneath, and the centerpiece of her chest is a prominent circular gold emblem that resembles Doctor Strange's Eye of Agamotto. Sightseer's magic is blue, but it could easily change color considering the kaleidoscopic sight of her first magical encounter when she picked up the discarded phoropter from an alley.

Paulina Isn't Familiar With The Magic She Developed Artificially

Sightseer's magical awakening subverts the traditional laws of the Mystic Arts. Traditionally, Marvel sorcerers like from Doctor Strange and Wong are scholars who have to endure years of grueling study and spiritual training to manipulate magic. Paulina, an everyday employee at Boothe Media, accidentally opens an Origin Box based on Earth-6160's Mystic Arts and finds herself artificially injected with an equivalent of the Eye of Agamotto without any preparation or awareness of what the device actually gave her. And yet, Paulina becomes a full-fledged sorcerer superhero before she fully understands what has happened to her.

A typical Marvel sorcerer must train intensely just to look beyond the physical plane or manifest mystical constructs. Sightseer almost instantly gains the ability to see invisible entities behind the veil of normal reality. Paulina also achieves independent flight without having to rely on magical crutches common to other magic users, like levitation platforms or the magical equivalent to Iron Man's repulsors. If Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch fully retire, Sightseer could rewrite what it means to be a magic user in the Marvel Universe.
