Nikita Kucherov Linked To Montreal Canadiens As NHL Insider Reveals Surprising Interest

Nikita Kucherov has told the Tampa Bay Lightning he will not re-sign and wants out. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman first broke that news Friday evening, and within hours the entire league had an opinion on where the reigning Hart Trophy winner might land. Several teams have entered the conversation, but one name nobody saw coming has surfaced: the Montreal Canadiens. Daily Faceoff's Jeff Marek has brought up the Habs multiple times this season as a potential destination, well before the trade request even became official.

Why Montreal Is Suddenly in the Kucherov Conversation

Marek publicly raised the idea of Kucherov potentially playing for Montreal if he were to leave Tampa Bay, framing it around the growing Russian presence on the Canadiens roster and the possibility of the veteran superstar serving as a mentor to Ivan Demidov. It is a speculative angle, but Marek is not a broadcaster who floats names carelessly.

Montreal GM Kent Hughes has missed out on Matthew Knies, Kirill Marchenko, and Dylan Larkin this year, with Larkin continuing to block a trade to the Canadiens by refusing to waive his no-trade clause. Kucherov's situation, though more complicated, could be Hughes' most realistic shot yet at landing the kind of top-six impact forward Montreal desperately needs.

If Kucherov were added to the mix, he would slot immediately onto a top line alongside Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki, giving Montreal arguably the best first line in the NHL. The Canadiens are young, ascending, and cap-flexible enough to absorb his $9.5 million AAV. Kucherov's agent is Dan Milstein, who has a known working relationship with Montreal's front office, which adds at least one practical layer to what otherwise sounds like pure fantasy.

Montreal also knocked Tampa Bay out of the playoffs last season, so Kucherov has seen firsthand how competitive this Canadiens group has become. That matters. Players who want to win pay attention to those details.

The Real Obstacles Standing Between Kucherov and Montreal

Getting excited is easy. Getting a deal done is something else entirely.

The Lightning will almost certainly try to avoid trading Kucherov within the Atlantic Division. Sending the franchise's all-time leading scorer to a direct divisional rival would be a difficult pill for Tampa Bay to swallow, regardless of the return package.

There is also the question of what the Habs could realistically offer. Tampa Bay is not in full rebuild mode. They will want pieces that help them compete now, not a futures-heavy package built around draft picks. That limits what Montreal can put on the table.

Teams like Utah and several other franchises with stronger prospect pipelines are also circling Kucherov. The Mammoth, for instance, have the young roster depth and cap flexibility to make a compelling offer to Tampa Bay, putting them in a better position for a deal at this stage.

Still, the Kucherov-to-Montreal thread keeps coming up. Marek has raised the Canadiens as a viable destination on multiple occasions since the start of this season, and now that the trade request is confirmed, the Habs suddenly have a reason to pick up the phone at least. Whether Kent Hughes can convert that into an actual deal is another matter. Given how many stars this front office has watched walk out of reach this year, Montreal's fans would be forgiven for managing expectations.
