Bank Indonesia explains how the new KKI payment system works

Translate

Purwokerto, Central Java (ANTARA) - Aswin Gantina, Head of Bank Indonesia’s Purwokerto Representative Office, said the Indonesian Credit Card (KKI) is designed to complement the digital payment ecosystem by providing an alternative payment method.

“This is not about extending credit, but rather about deferring payment. The facility allows users to make purchases before making the payment,” he said on Wednesday.

According to Gantina, the KKI complements various payment instruments currently used by the public, ranging from account balances and debit cards to digital wallets and credit cards.

In addition, the KKI allows users to make transactions in advance and settle the payments by the due date.

“This scheme provides flexibility when payment needs arise before funds are available in the account,” Gantina said.

He cited the example of someone who needs to make a payment at the beginning of the month, while funds will only become available a few days later.

With the KKI, the person can make the transaction in advance, provided it remains within the available facility limit.

He stressed that the KKI is not intended to encourage people to take on debt or promote excessive consumption.

Instead, the instrument is intended to serve as a payment facility that provides users with greater flexibility.

He expressed hope that the KKI would also increase the penetration of digital payment instruments without relying solely on mobile banking and digital wallets.

“We hope KKI will become increasingly recognized by the public as an alternative payment option that complements the national digital transaction ecosystem,” Gantina said.

The Indonesian Credit Card (KKI) is a payment instrument launched simultaneously on August 17, 2026.

The KKI is part of the national payment system digitalization strategy under the Indonesian Payment System Blueprint (BSPI) 2030, which aims to strengthen the efficiency and security of the digital payment ecosystem.

The KKI launch also coincides with other supporting payment system policies, including the expansion of the QRIS Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) to 0 percent for transactions of up to Rp100,000.
