Victoria rattled by 18th earthquake in a month

Translate

A magnitude-3.5 earthquake has been recorded at Arawata, near the Victorian town of Korumburra in the state's south-east.

Almost 1,500 people have told Geoscience Australia that they felt the earthquake just before midnight.

It hit at a depth of 3 kilometres at 11:52pm and was felt as far away as Melbourne and Geelong.

Residents in the rural hamlet of Arawata are starting to get used to the earth moving in the night.

It is the 18th earthquake to hit Victoria's Gippsland region since September 26, when a magnitude-3.9 quake was recorded at Ensay, in the state's High Country

"It was a big bang and then the house started shaking," Arawata Community Hall Association secretary Sue Coloe said.

"It woke me and my husband, but then my husband just said, 'Oh, it's just another earthquake,'"

she said.

"This time it was shaking. Others have been a rolling feeling."

Last night's aftershock follows a magnitude-4.8 earthquake at Arawata on October 3 that was felt by almost 20,000 people.

In the past month, Geosciences Australia has recorded 14 tremors in South Gippsland.

A magnitude-4.9 earthquake struck in waters south of Adelaide yesterday.
