The fire was reported at around 10.56 pm on Friday inside the five-storey building. According to TOI City, the flames spread to electrical wiring and installations on the ground floor. A sofa and split air-conditioner were also affected during the incident. The Mumbai Fire Brigade responded to the emergency and brought the fire under control by 11.58 pm. An air conditioner in the hall, which was not even switched on, sparked and emanated fire."

The situation became more dangerous as smoke spread through the residence.

Talat Aziz said visibility inside the house deteriorated within minutes. Bina moved into the upstairs bathroom and sought assistance from the window. A neighbour then used a ladder to reach her and bring her out of the building."Within minutes the blaze spread to the curtains, and blinding black smoke billowed out. I could not see a thing. I kept calling to my wife, fearing for her safety. She ran into the bathroom upstairs, turned on the shower and called for help from the window.

A neighbour climbed a ladder and rescued Bina through the window. We were hospitalised for suffocation and took discharge Saturday," he added. The family is expected to stay at a hotel until the damaged residence becomes inhabitable again.
