Nigeria has taken another significant step towards re-establishing its presence on the global junior table tennis stage following the selection of Umar Ayoola and Elizabeth Emelike for the prestigious ITTF World Hopes Week & Challenge 2026.

The event, scheduled to take place from October 12 to 18 at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, United Kingdom, will bring together 36 of the world’s most talented U-12 players from 26 countries.

Jointly organised by the International Table Tennis Federation and Table Tennis England, the programme represents the final stage of the ITTF’s talent identification pathway. It serves as a platform for the most promising young players from across the continents to receive advanced training from elite coaches while competing against some of the best emerging talents in the sport.

Ayoola and Emelike secured their places in Sheffield after outstanding performances at the Africa Hopes Week and Challenge held in Ghana. Their achievements earned them selection among the continent’s top prospects and a chance to compete on the global stage.

According to the ITTF, participants were chosen through their respective Continental Hopes programmes, with only the strongest performers advancing to the World Hopes Week & Challenge. The 2026 edition highlights the programme’s growing international reach, featuring players from both established table tennis powers and emerging nations.

Throughout the week-long event, participants will engage in intensive technical training sessions alongside a Challenge competition. However, player assessments will extend beyond match results, taking into account technical ability, attitude towards training, and overall development potential. The most outstanding performers will be selected for the prestigious Hopes Team, providing them with a fast-track opportunity into the ITTF High Performance pathway.

Nigeria will be joined by other African representatives, including Egypt’s Zeina Farouk and Adam Lashin, Tunisia’s Ritej Charif, and Uganda’s Joseph Sebatindira.

The competition will also feature talented young players from countries such as Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, France, India, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Qatar, Romania, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, and several others, underscoring the truly global nature of the event.

The ITTF World Hopes Week & Challenge 2026 promises a unique blend of high-level training, competitive action, and cultural exchange.
