Indonesia plans national team to support data center development

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Industry plans to establish a national team comprising government institutions and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry to coordinate efforts to support data center development.

"Data centers are important for industries; they serve as catalysts for economic growth," Deputy Industry Minister Faisol Riza said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He explained that the proposed team was needed in response to feedback from ministries, government agencies, and state-owned enterprises that data center development requires substantial electricity and water supplies.

Riza said the team was expected to help stakeholders coordinate efforts to meet data centers' energy needs without compromising supplies for the wider public. He expressed hope that the team would be established soon.

Commenting on the suspended artificial intelligence (AI) data center project in Jatiluhur, West Java, he said the Industry Ministry would coordinate with relevant stakeholders to address the issue.

"In the near term, we will invite the West Java government and several ministries and agencies to discuss not only the Jatiluhur data center but also similar projects at other locations," he said.

The deputy minister added that he had recently discussed data center development with the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning and planned to hold talks with the Ministry of Public Works on water supply issues.

West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi said on October 2 that his administration had ordered work on the Jatiluhur data center project to stop because it lacked Environmental Impact Assessment (AMDAL) and Building Approval (PBG) documents.

Construction on the project began in late September on an 8,000-square-meter site. At full operational capacity, the facility was expected to consume 384 liters of water per second and require up to 640 megawatts of electricity.

Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono addressed the issue on October 12, emphasizing that data center projects must comply with environmental regulations and requirements.
