Tourism Minister chairs GEM Board Meeting

Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy chaired on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, a meeting of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) Authority’s Board of Directors at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization.

During the meeting, GEM CEO Ahmed Ghoneim reviewed the museum’s key activities and events in recent months, including visits by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and his wife, as well as Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, during his official visit to Egypt earlier this month.

The meeting also reviewed visitor numbers and revenues since the museum’s official opening in November 2025 through the end of August. The museum received around four million visitors, with visitor numbers beginning to rise as the new tourist season gets underway.

The board approved the museum authority’s amended financial statements and final accounts for fiscal year 2025/2026, and accepted a French donation of humidity-monitoring devices for the museum’s galleries under the Egyptian-French archaeological cooperation project. The equipment will support preventive conservation by monitoring environmental conditions around the artifacts.

The board was also briefed on memorandums of understanding being prepared with several international universities and archaeological museums to strengthen cooperation with the Grand Egyptian Museum Authority.
