Olivia Colman's "masterpiece" period drama is being removed from UK streamer very soon

Mothering Sunday, the period drama starring Olivia Colman and Josh O'Connor, was added to a UK streamer earlier this month, but you'll have to hurry if you want to watch it for free.

The film came to Channel 4 a few weeks ago, but will be leaving the service in just under a fortnight's time. The final date that you can watch the period drama is 6 October, so don't miss out!

The romantic drama is based on Graham Swift's 2016 novel of the same name, with the story charting the doomed romance between Jane Fairchild (Odessa Young) and Paul Sheringham (O'Connor).

In addition to the aforementioned stars, the supporting cast also includes Colin Firth, Sope Dirisu, Patsy Ferran, Emma D'Arcy, Caroline Harker and Glenda Jackson, with the latter playing an older version of Jane.

Directed by Eva Husson from a screenplay by Alice Birch, Mothering Sunday was generally praised by critics upon its release in 2021, with Rotten Tomatoes currently reporting a solid approval rating of 78% from 138 reviews.

It wasn't quite as popular with viewers, however, with the audience score being at 60%. On IMDb, the film has a solid user rating of 6.1/10 from over 6000 logs, with several praising the period detail and performances.

"This is a beautifully written, beautifully acted and beautifully shot piece of work. The understated performances from Colin Firth and Olivia Colman are a delight," wrote one user, who called it an "absolute masterpiece of understated excellence".

"Beautiful scenery, fantastic acting and a wonderful storytelling. When all these great actors are put together to tell the story of Jane, you know there will be a lot you will love about this movie," opined another viewer.

Another user was also full of praise as they called it "deliciously slow [and] modernist", writing: "So this film is simply gorgeous... A wonderful and sumptuous - and incredibly well acted - film which is well worth watching over and over again."

Mothering Sunday is streaming on Channel 4 until 6 October.
